The world needs more Audi restomods.

I’ve always thought these would be perfect candidates for restomods... They’re absolutely beautiful cars, but everyone who’s ever owned one says it was a poorly-made, unreliable, horrid dumpster fire of an automobile. All that and they rust real bad, too. But if you can find one that hasn’t rotted into the ground, there are now all sorts of fantastic, reliable(ish), cool, powerful drivetrains made by Audi you can swap into one of these so it drives and performs the way it looks like it aught to. Why let the Mustangs and Camaros have all the restomoding fun?

Here’s a fun exercise— use your favorite “classic car search engine”...

Look for old Benz— you’d find lots of cars from the 50s and prior
Look for old BMW— you’ll find lots of cars from the 60s
Look for old AUDI? It’s like they fucking didn’t exist prior to 1991 when they finally got their re-boot act together with a more resilient A4 and such.

You, on occasion run into an old 5000 or a 100 or even CGT.  But man good examples of early AUDIs are rare, but remarkably not highly valued.  I guess they were awful cars, eh?

Yep, I found one old Audi.  Remarkably cheap.  A Bimmer of its vintage would be five times more.

Yep, they have the unfortunate combination of being trash cars that sold in low numbers to begin with, few people kept/preserved them, and with all the rust and build quality problems, they just didn’t last. Which is why I think on the rare occasions when they do become available, the best possible thing you can do for it is restomod it. Replace the garbage bits with good, modern stuff so people can see these beautiful machines on the road again. Restomodding one of these gives it its best chance for survival.

I’ve got an old Audi...

It’s cool, but kinda shit. FWD, longitudinal, so it corners... weird. I thought bad the first time I drove it, since it didn’t get through corners quite like my Golf, but I’ve driven it around the block a few times just to keep the fluids moving and I wouldn’t say bad honestly. Kind of weird. It’ll understeer horribly if you toss it into a corner (the way I do my VWs), but if you go through at a reasonable speed, the rear wheels kind of... steer themselves? It’s a really odd sensation.

Interior wise, it’s crazy. 33 year old electric power windows, sunroof, and mirrors all work perfectly. Shifter feels great. Steering feel is wonderful as well. The seats are comfortable and bolstered perfectly for a sporty luxury car. The oddest thing about the inside is that the driver seat isn’t height adjustable, but the bottom itself is angle adjustable, independent of the seat back. There’s a similar mechanism in my Cabriolet. What a weird car.

In general, prior to the B4 era, I don’t think Audis were far enough to be considered a car distinct from their platform sharing VW brethren. I’ve sat in a B2 Quantum, and it’s all pretty much the same as my B2 4000s. The Audi has nicer interior and better switchgear, but it’s all the same stuff honestly. I think the B3 Audi maintaining the longitudinal drivetrain while the B3/4 Passat went transverse was the transition for Audi to become its own brand, rather than a high trim VW.

I still want more early watercooled stuff. Particularly a liftback coupe Dasher.

I would not throw this out of bed, even if it left a few oil spots. Just sayin’ I’m open-minded on early VAG group-y stuff...

Oh baby. Give me a 100 wagon and I’d do dirty things to it.
